The General Assembly meeting o for Education for all EFASOM members and education stakeholder

The General Assembly of the Somali Coalition for Education for all EFASOM held a meeting in Galkayo, Puntland in Somalia in 28 October 2014. The meeting was attended by education stakeholder and members of EFASOM.

The meeting focused on three main issues; presenting report of the activities of the CSEF project in 2013-2014, Measuring and evaluating the performance of the coalition and the prospects and discussing the future of education 2015-2020    

The National Coordinator of EFASOM, Mr. Adam Mohamed mentioned that the purpose of this meeting was to exhibit the performance of the last 12 months and the preparation of the 5-year long-term plan of education 2015-2020.

The Regional Education Officer (REO) of Mudug under the Ministry of Education of Puntland State, Mr. Bashir Ahmed Khalaf said “this meeting was essential and clearly indicates that EFASOM is transparent at the same time is content to exhibit their performance appraisal. We are ready to collaborate with review their performance for the year 2013/2014 at the same time evaluate if their activities deserve to cover our needs, what ideas do we need to add value to their plan since they showed their per-annum country performance. We better collaborate with them to develop their long-term plan. Needs are over-wide, however, establishing libraries and laboratories are the two basics that students need to practice and upgrade their knowledge. Students need to get reference books.

Mrs. Zahro Ali Farah, the Deputy Chair of EFASOM Board of Directors at the same time is the Regional Supervisor of Non-Formal Education under the Ministry of Education Puntland indicated incentives of the teachers are low. “It is better the teachers should be supported economically and knowledgably. Enriching quality of teachers is the real need” she added.

The Director of Dr. Ismail Jumale Human Rights Organization Mr. Osman Aweis told the participants that a group of three members including himself were traveled from Mogadishu to join this meeting and participate developing the 5-year strategy of EFASOM. He indicated that the center of DIJHRO is a permanent member with EFASOM that they attended similar GA meeting September 2013 in Mogadishu. He urged that the local education groups should ensure accessibility and the right to education for all.

In the end of the meeting the attendees summed up recommendations as the following: 

  • -         To provide free primary quality education
  • -          To ensure superiority   of teachers by increasing incentives and teacher training
  • -          Developing the National Curriculum by restoring the Somali version of previous curriculum that had direct contact with our culture and relation
  • -          Networking all education stakeholders of the country
  • -          Provision of rural education
  • -          Special NFE education centers
  • -          To establish libraries and laboratories
  • -          To provide education materials such as textbooks
  • -          To rehabilitate street children
  • -          To ensure schools are appropriate spaces for education
  • -          To provide trainings to CECs
  • -          To ensure girls get their basic needs in their schools
  • -          To monitor and evaluation school performance
  • -          To rehabilitate school buildings such as classrooms and lavatories
  • -          To ensure quality of girls education and children with special needs
  • -          To consider fundraising to support education
  • -          To establish national teacher union in Puntland state
  • -          To encourage people for the importance of education.
